We’re starting off the summer by taking a seat in the theater.
After all, there’s really no better place to encounter magic and to talk about magic’s potential. So we assembled another Genii roundtable of theater professionals to talk about the magic of one-person shows—the creative hurdles and the artistic opportunities. What is it that turns an “act” into a “theatrical event?” What changes the way an audience perceives magic? What opportunities are magicians missing? Benjamin Schrader, Jenny Weinbloom, and Alexander (Sandy) Marshall lent their expertise.
And then, our editor at large, Chloe Olewitz, explains the fascinating story behind ASL translators (that’s American Sign Language) who make countless lectures and shows accessible for Deaf audiences. Those translators balance unique situations with our world of magic. It’s a brilliant look at magicians, from a surprising perspective.
We also have an early review of Derren Brown’s new stage show, Only Human, by Craig Mitchell. It’s an amazing collection of psychological magic and mentalism. This will tell you what surprises are planned for his audiences.
